★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Jorge and the red mug team did a phenomenal job on our renovation. Our renovation was complex, involved multiple stakeholders, budget constraints and unique features. The TL;DR is our renovation was challenging and the Red Mug Team delivered and help us realize our dream house. The renovation comprised of completely gutting the entire third floor of our condo as well as most of the second floor. Jorge went above and beyond to support our project, including making TV appearances as our renovation was featured on Windy City rehab. There was an enormous amount of time pressure and a lot of emotions toward the end of the product as my husband was commuting back and forth between Florida and Chicago. Jorge handled all of the pressure and the numerous requests with grace and professionalism. We are proud of our newly renovated home and grateful to Jorge and his team for the work they did. As a bonus, the show also turned out to be a great TV episode! I highly recommend working with Jorge and his team. They will get the work done, at a good quality and aim to meet all of your requests. Thank you!!
October 18 · Kaley SimonJorge and his team at Red Mug Construction did a great job with my bathroom renovation! It was a complete tear down that included relocating my shower to where my bathtub used to be and then leveraging the existing plumbing of my old shower location to move my washer/dryer there.I had only a rough guideline of what I wanted my bathroom to look like, Jorge presented me options for the finishes that would work best with the tiles that I picked out. He was also great at communication, keeping me in the loop with regular check in's. The final product is everything I had hoped for!My two largest takeaways is that they were able to finish up the job while I was away on vacation with no issues and that the project remained on budget. I have and will continue to recommend the services of Red Mug Construction in the future
November 03 · Alexandre BronsVery responsive and helpful in decision making. The whole team communicated very well throughout the whole process and when there was any minor issues they were quick to respond and fix it. Extremely happy with the work that was done on remodeling my basement!! I will be a repeat customer and will be recommending them to anyone who needs work done!
September 06 · zach lewisWe had a terrible experience with Red Mug Constructions team, and definitely don’t recommend them for even the simplest projects. I wished I could give 0 stars!A small kitchen nook/bar job which based on their estimation was supposed to take only 4 days, took more than 4 months with unsatisfying results. Here is a list of some issues and damages that they caused throughout the project:- The team they hired for measuring and building the pantry doors was incompetent. They made repeated mistakes in measuring the height and width of the cabinets, repeatedly delivering cabinets with uneven measurements. After four rounds of them delivering the unevenly sized cabinet doors, we finally gave up and had them install the cabinets with wrong measurements.- Their contractors failed to close off an air vent under the pantry which blows hot air directly into the pantry, causing food stored in the pantry to spoil. We hired another contractor to come and fix this error.- Their contractors damaged our walls and hardwood floors, and when asked to repair the damages on the floor they used the wrong finish so the repaired area does not match the original flooring.- Rather than professionally installing LED lights under the butcher blocks (as per our request), they bought and installed cheap LED lights from Amazon to place under the butcher blocks - something that a 10-year old with no training could have done- They used aerosol spray paint inside the kitchen without covering countertops or furniture in the area - causing a big cloud of paint dust to settle on everything in the kitchen- Jorge, the owner, intentionally delayed installation of granite countertops and ended up leaving the country for a month during which he was unreachable
December 26 · Parisa SbakWarning: Severe Issues with Red Mug Construction & InvestmentBackground:My husband & I engaged Red Mug Investments & Construction for a luxury 3-bed condo renovation project located at North Clark Street in Chicago's Gold Coast. We previously had another contractor start the work but then were pressured by our building board to expedite the process and were forced to hire another company that consisted of a larger crew. The project, overseen by Mr. Jorge Catrain Ostáriz (project manager) and Paul (his second hand) was meant to be completed within 4/5 weeks but was extended for an unexpectedly prolonged period of 4.5 months beyond the initially suggested completion deadline.Communication and Oversight Issues:Throughout the project, communication was severely lacking, and Mr. Catrain's presence, who acted as the project manager, was almost non-existent. He traveled to Spain twice for pleasure & stayed away for almost three weeks at one point. Despite being told multiple times that he should be there every day, he would only come once every ten (10) days. He would even get complaints from his workers that he is nonexistent & that a project manager should be on site every day to supervise the work. This resulted in a series of incomplete tasks, delayed timelines, & an overall lack of oversight. As clients, we found ourselves assuming responsibilities that should have been managed by Mr. Catrain & his team.Quality of Workmanship:The quality of workmanship was subpar, leading to numerous issues that required extensive rework. Damages included a non-functional shower floor, damages to wall tiles, cracks in bathroom tile flooring & walls, & damage to walls that had to be re-patched multiple times. And again, we as customers had to deal with all of this, as the project manager was non-existent.Unjust Extra Charges:During the first to middle part of the project, Mr. Catrain consistently imposed charges for every single item, including minor components like bolts & nails. This practice was in stark contradiction to our contractual agreement, which clearly outlined our responsibility for major materials like flooring, drywall, & tiles. The contract did not stipulate payment for basic construction materials such as nails, glue, and paint.Despite the agreement, Mr. Catrain took advantage of the situation by presenting us with bills for items that were inherently part of the standard construction process. Only upon our insistence and after bringing this to his attention did he reluctantly cease this practice.Environmental Disregard:Another alarming aspect was the complete disregard for sustainable & environmentally friendly practices. Despite our explicit instructions against it, the workers routinely poured paint down the drain & washed their brushes in an environmentally harmful manner.Non-compliance with Instructions:Repeated attempts were made to instruct the workers on the importance of sustainable practices, & specifically, the proper disposal of paint. Unfortunately, these efforts were met with resistance, and the workers argued instead of adhering to our reasonable requests.Unprofessional Work Habits:Beyond environmental concerns, the work culture exhibited by Red Mug's team was consistently unprofessional. Workers regularly arrived late, took extended lunch breaks, and left promptly at 5 pm.Contractual Disputes:Upon expressing our concerns, Mr. Catrain initially attempted to refute some of the reimbursement requests, asserting completion of the project & an outstanding payment of $4,000. However, as demonstrated by documented conversations, Mr. Catrain was aware and in agreement with the need for tile rework (for a third time!) in the shower, a cost he later tried to pass on to us. In response to our grievances, Mr. Catrain proposed an inadequate resolution that fell short of addressing the damages & incomplete work. This proposal included offering only a $1,500 credit. It's essential to note that the proposed credit did not reasonably cover the costs of damages and rework incurred.
