• We worked with John and the J&C team on a major renovation in 2023–2024, adding a 1,000 sq ft second-story addition to our 1909 Craftsman. The team did an incredible job preserving the original character of our home while seamlessly expanding it—you’d never know the second floor wasn’t always part of the house!The new space includes three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a reading nook upstairs, and they also reimagined the main floor by opening up a bedroom to create a cozy family nook off the kitchen. They took care of critical structural work too, including full earthquake retrofitting.John and his crew were professional, hardworking, and communicative every step of the way. Their attention to detail and thoughtful suggestions helped bring our vision to life—on time and on budget. We absolutely love how everything turned out and wouldn’t hesitate to work with J&C again. Highly recommend!

• J&C Contractors did an extensive renovation of our kitchen, laundry, and powder room. It was a total “to the studs” (& beyond) project, and John and his team were fantastic to work with. This project involved multiple structural changes, as we moved load-bearing walls and pushed out an exterior wall to add square footage to the space, plus HVAC, plumbing, electrical, insulation, siding, windows, tiling, hardwoord flooring, cabinets and custom carpentry, painting, etc.We especially appreciated how John and Marcos would talk through options with us. They always gave us clear choices with an understanding of how they would impact pricing and timelines. We also really appreciated their flexibility when we decided to push out the exterior wall, which was a change to the original scope. John worked hard to get the engineer and city back quickly to approve the permit revision, and also was strategic about what work continued while we waited for that to ensure we weren’t taking on unnecessary risk.The attention to detail is another thing the J&C team does exceptionally well – we had custom cabinets with a really complicated façade to cover a soffit, and the team didn’t think the original plan looked good enough, so they basically built an extra piece from scratch to make the entire thing look seamless. For our window installation, Marcos came up with a brilliant idea for how to frame the window using the same stone slab as our backsplash and it’s truly one of my favorite features. Also, I realize it seems like a given, but based on many other renovations we’ve seen, the fact that everything is perfectly level and centered is huge (even the cabinet drawer faces all line up exactly!).Finally, the team did a fantastic job keeping the area as clean as possible. This was critical as we chose to live in our house during the renovation. They would regularly inspect the plastic walls and make sure things were sealed well, plus they cleaned up after themselves every day and when the project was completed. Really fantastic experience, and we’ll be hiring J&C for any future projects!

• J&C Contractors did an extensive upstairs remodel in our 1927 home and we cannot recommend them enough. Our project involved creating a primary bathroom in an existing space and adding a dormer to create an extra bedroom and expanded primary closet. The project included framing, roofing, siding, insulation, plumbing, electrical, drywall, heated flooring, window installation, skylight installation, tiling, hardwood flooring, custom carpentry (linen closet), painting, and refinishing exterior wood doors. The project was completed on schedule and on budget.We had a wonderful experience with John and his team from start to finish. John was incredibly detailed in his estimate, providing line items for the labor and materials. He was very receptive to feedback and questions, and we came to a finalized estimate that everyone was happy with. Our project started a few weeks late due to permitting delays (not as a result of John’s team), but once we got started everything proceeded on schedule. John and Marcos’s attention to detail and finish work is exceptional. When measuring for a custom bathroom vanity cabinet, the cabinet maker said John does some of the best finish work she has seen, and she was right! John also recommended and mapped out a herringbone pattern for the tile on the sloped ceiling of the shower and it turned out beautifully. There was a miscommunication with the electrical subcontractor (who did extra work without getting a change order), but John strongly advocated for us and we were able to come to an agreement that worked for all parties. When I went into early labor a month prior to the finish date, John, Marcos and the team worked diligently to make the downstairs of the house spotless for when we brought our new baby home. We have been living in our new spaces for a year now, and I still miss having the crew around. You won’t regret hiring John and his team!
